The Mars Science Laboratory, nicknamed “Curiosity,” was a feat of passion and engineering unparalleled for some time. As the space shuttles retired from service and NASA struggled to find a direction (publicly speaking) this newest Mars rover plummeted toward the surface of The Red Planet with a novel and complex landing system. The rover’s size and intricacy was a big issue and the team — along with the world — sat waiting for confirmation of the most complicated landing system ever attempted.
The stress and suspense of the journey made the successful arrival that much more jubilant, so when Curiosity sent back its first photos, the world wept with joy. Here is a tribute to the efforts of everyone who helped make this mission a success.
