An active region just over the sun’s eastern horizon is crackling with solar flares and hurling material high above the stellar surface.
One of yesterday’s flares, a C4-class event, created a wave of ionization in Earth’s upper atmosphere despite the fact that the blast site was not directly visible from Earth. The source of this activity appears to be old sunspot 1112, which has spent the last approx. 12 days transiting the far side of the sun, and is now about to turn back toward our planet.
Visit http://spaceweather.com for movies of today’s activity and updates.

A really amazing picture of our Sun. Especially scroll down to the picture where he compares the solar flares with the size of the Earth.
This reminds me of the old Gerry Anderson movie “Journey to the Far Side of the Sun†aka “Doubleganger†where two mirror earths orbited one Sun and never knew of the others' existence.
We are too much like oysters observing the sun through the water .
The creation of this wonderful facility marks an important milestone in the history of solar Physics in this century. This telescope will go a long way in providing the required ground support in terms of observing the Sun for the space borne telescopes – HINODE and SDO .
Also this telescope will be a very important stepping stone leading to the creation of similar and bigger facilities that are in the pipe line , like the National Large Solar Telescope ( 2 m aperture ) proposed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics , Bangalore , India and the ATST by the NSO.
I remember a 60′s movie called JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN aka DOPPELGANGER that was similar. About time somebody did it again.
