I finally got some time to play with the EQ6 adapter and see if it fitted onto the pier out in the observatory. I’m happy to report that it was a perfect fit. That was a bit of a relief:

I used a couple of small spirit levels to check the leveling of the adapter plate. using the nuts on the pier threads to alter its angle.

The next thing to do was to secure the EQ6 mount to the adapter. The mount comes with a sturdy tripod and a bar is threaded through the tripod base into the mount to secure them together – that’s the right half of the bar in the image below. The thread on the left half is used to secure the eyepiece tray to the bar.

However, bringing the bar out to use with the pier setup showed there was a problem…

Yes, it’s way too long to be used with the pier. The bottom pier plate is a solid piece of metal, so no central hole I can put the bar into to allow it to be used. Since I don’t want to cut the bar in half, there are now two options:

1. Drill out a hole in the lower pier plate to take the excess length of the threaded bar and width of the knurled knob

2. Find out what the tap of the thread used on the bar is and it’s diameter and see if I can I cobble something suitable together to use in its place
