33 years ago, a seminal cosmology series hit TV screens. That was the PBS produced Cosmos series hosted by Carl Sagan. If you’re under 30, you may not even have heard of it.

Thirteen powerful episodes took the viewer from the edge of the Universe down to planet Earth and various characters who have changed or influenced the history of science. Carl Sagan died in 1996 but his wife, Ann Druyan, worked on re-issuing Cosmos in 2002. This updated release featured new visuals and images that had become available in the then 20 or so intervening years. Despite major advances and discoveries in that period, little in Cosmos needed to be updated. On-screen captions would appear to announce when new theories superseded old, or to announce new facts. I reviewed the updated series here a while back.

If you have a Netflix account, Cosmos is available to watch on that platform if you don’t want to go out and buy the DVDs.

Now, Cosmos is to be reborn. Reworked. Updated. Aimed at a 21st Century audience. With Neil deGrasse Tyson stepping into Carl Sagan’s rather large shoes. The trailer above gives some glimpses into the production, and it looks to be pretty faithful to the original incarnation of this iconic series.

It lands in early 2014. Something to really look forward to!
