Discovered by: Hideo Nishimura (Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken, Japan) (reported by S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, via CBET 4285)

Discovery magnitude: 12.4 unfiltered CCD on three 10-s CCD frames, using a 200-mm-f.l. f/3.2 lens with a Canon EOS 5D digital camera

Discovery date: 2016 June 10.629 UT

Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 17 38 19.31 Dec. -37 25 08.7 (from VSX)

Spectra (via CBET 4285): Spectroscopy obtained by K. Ayani (Bisei Astronomical Observatory, BAO) on 2016 Jun. 11.65 UT with the BAO 1.01-m telescope shows the star to be a nova in early stages. Ayani’s spectrogram is posted here.

Observing recommendations: Observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, spectroscopy) as instrumentation permits are strongly encouraged as the nova evolves.

b. P. Schmeer (Bischmisheim, Germany) reports a star of red magnitude 17.1-17.4 in the USNO-B1.0 catalogue with position end figures 19.26s, 07.7″. Schmeer also reports a potentially better progenitor candidate on the Digitized Sky Survey infrared image just southwest of the USNO-B1.0 star.
