In northern Chile, at 16,500 feet above sea level, scientists from around the world are building the world’s largest radio telescope. When completed in 2013, sixty-six huge antennas – some weighing 115 tons – will stretch across a 10 square mile area of desert, point at the stars and try to unlock the secrets of the universe.

In this preview video from tonight’s new episode, Rock Center correspondent Harry Smith journeys to Chile to see the ALMA observatory, which looks straight out of Star Wars and has an ambitious goal: to unlock the secrets of the universe.

The research there has already started; Harry Smith takes a rare trip to this remarkable and unearthly place.

My thanks to NBC for providing access to this preview of tonight’s episode.
