What Do the Bible and Quran Say About Space Shuttle Disaster?

There are many space disasters. Some of these disasters are avoidable and could be corrected. Other space disasters unfortunately are unavoidable.

Example of the unavoidable Space Shuttle Disaster:

The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred in the United States in 1986. As an outcome of this disaster, the United States President Ronald Reagan appointed a special commission to investigate the accident The Rogers Commission offered NASA nine recommendations that were to be seriously considered before shuttle flights resumed.

In 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster occurred when the Shuttle disintegrated over Texas during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

Space Shuttle Disaster in the Bible:

Nothing is mentioned about this topic in the Bible.

Space Shuttle Disaster in the Quran:

The Quran warns us about the unavoidable space disasters.

The Quran as we knew gives a conditioned prophecy for space travel saying that jinn and man would be able to pass through the regions of the heavens if they have power, authority and knowledge. Jinn and man have to thank Allah, their lord because He gave them countless favors.

Then the Quran tells us about the expected disasters waiting for Space shuttles.

In Space, any Space shuttle is expected to be hit by flames of fire and flash of Copper then the Astronauts in such Space shuttle will not be able to defend themselves.

Surah 55:33-35

SHAKIR: o assembly of the jinn and the men! if you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you cannot pass through but with authority

PICKTHAL: o company of jinn and men, if ye have power to penetrate (all) regions of the heavens and the earth, then penetrate (them)! ye will never penetrate them save with (our) sanction.

YUSUFALI: o ye assembly of jinn and men! if it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass!

SHAKIR: which then of the bounties of your lord will you deny?

PICKTHAL: which is it, of the favors of your lord that ye deny?

YUSUFALI: then which of the favors of your lord will ye deny?

SHAKIR: the flames of fire and smoke (Copper) will be sent on you two, then you will not be able to defend yourselves

PICKTHAL: there will be sent, against you both, heat of fire and flash of brass, and ye will not escape.

YUSUFALI: on you will be sent (o ye evil ones twain!) a flame of fire (to burn) and a smoke (to choke): no defense will ye have:

In respect to Jinn, they are invisible creatures that are able to flight in space.

Jinn used to steal a hearing in the Space.

There is a missile of flaming fire for who steals a hearing.

This missile of flaming fire is piercing.

Surah 72:9

SHAKIR: and that we used to sit in some of the sitting-places thereof to steal a hearing (in space), but he who would (try to) listen now would find a flame lying in wait for him:

PICKTHAL: and we used to sit on places (high in space) therein to listen. but he who listeneth now findeth a flame in wait for him;

YUSUFALI: 'we used, indeed, to sit there in (hidden) stations (in space), to (steal) a hearing; but any who listen now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush.

Surah 15:18

SHAKIR: but he who steals a hearing, so there follows him a visible flame

PICKTHAL: save him who stealeth the hearing, and them doth a clear flame pursue.

YUSUFALI: but any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see).

Surah 37:10

SHAKIR: except him who snatches off but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame

PICKTHAL: save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.

YUSUFALI: except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.

NASA may need to put the Quranic warning about the unavoidable space disasters into consideration. Using Silver and Gold in manufacturing the Spaceship will certainly help as the Quran proposes.

Also, the choice of the name of the Space shuttle is very important.

I do not know why NASA named the shuttle "Challenger"

Challenging who?

Challenging Allah?

Challenging the Lord?

Challenging the nature?

Challenging the Space?

Challenging the universe?

Challenging what?

However, if the Western people are affectionate with challenging, it might be productive to remind them by the two Quranic challenges that Allah challenges the entire human with. One of these challenges is Linguistic and the other is Biological.

The first challenge is a Linguistic Challenge:

This Linguistic Challenge is addressed to all the jinn and man. This Linguistic Challenge dated more than 1400 years and jinn and mankind have nothing yet to do with it.

Surah 17:88

SHAKIR: say: if men and jinn should combine together to bring the like of this quran, they could not bring the like of it, though some of them were aiders of others

PICKTHAL: say: verily, though mankind and the jinn should assemble to produce the like of this qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof though they were helpers one of another.

YUSUFALI: say: "if the whole of mankind and jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support.

The Biological Challenge:

This challenge is addressed to the entire human.

Can mankind create a fly?

Surah 22:73-74

SHAKIR: o people! a parable is set forth, therefore listen to it: surely those whom you call upon besides Allah cannot create fly, though they should all gather for it, and should the fly snatch away anything from them, they could not take it back from i weak are the invoker and the invoked

PICKTHAL: o mankind! a similitude is coined, so pay ye heed to it: lo! those on whom ye call beside Allah will never create a fly though they combine together for the purpose. and if the fly took something from them, they could not rescue it from it. so weak are (both) the seeker and the sought!

YUSUFALI: o men! here is a parable set forth! Listen to it! those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!

SHAKIR: they have not estimated Allah with the estimation that is due to him; most surely Allah is strong, mighty

PICKTHAL: they measure not Allah his rightful measure. lo! Allah is strong, almighty.

YUSUFALI: no just estimate have they made of Allah: for Allah is he who is strong and able to carry out his will.

Back to the main topic of my series of articles (1- 49); this is my question to you smart readers: "Is the Quran quoted from the Bible "? And which book preceded the modern Sciences?

â??Pin-Ups Calendar Girlâ? Plans to Attend Premiere of The Americans on D-Day

During World War II pin-up calendars boosted moral of U.S.

Soldiers fighting overseas, and that spirit comes alive again with the California’s "Calendar Angel" Gina Elise on Monday, April 27, 2009. That’s when the American Legion, post # 43 will show the battle tour film Americans on D-Day.

Elise will join, surviving American Legion veterans of D-Day in Normandy, Richard Lanni, Film Director, The Americans on D-Day and film Host Ellwood von Seibold. One of the stars of the battle tour film Howard Manoian, a veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne will attend the event. He landed in Normandy on D-Day and returned many years later to live in the country that he helped liberate.

Gina Elise, nicknamed "The Betty Grable of a new generation" and "The Calendar Angel" will be selling her T-Shirts and Calendars at American Legion Hall event. Elise, who has donated $20,000 to aid veteran hospital patients has received numerous community awards for her volunteer work. " I want to raise $20,000 for veterans this year," said Elise, who has made countless personal visits to ill and injured

veterans in hospitals and facilities across the country. Elise was featured on Fox News last January.

"I now truly believe, three years after launching this project, that one calendar, included with a special message, purchased for a young recruit, can make all the difference in the world," she said. "Just to let him know that others are thinking of him."

Film Director Richard Lanni has also trekked across the country meeting with military dignitaries, museum officials and veterans of World War II about Normandy. He‘s researching D-Day and interviewing veterans in a series of films on Normandy. The next film will be "A Soldier’s Journey" to be released around Memorial Day.

"It is the 65th Anniversary of D-day," said Lanni, WW2 Reflections, Dublin, Ireland, who arrives in Hollywood this week. "We have filmed interviews with surviving veterans of Normandy that will be showcased in Hollywood later this month to relive those days. I am here to meet more veterans and visit museums so our films will be accurate."

The first film premieres Monday, April 27th, 7:00 p.m. (PDT), (Cocktails 6:00 - 7:00 pm), at the American Legion Post #43, 2035 N Highland Ave., Hollywood, CA. 90068. The film is available for any American Legion Post or veteran organizations upon request and will be shown for free. Veterans need to RSVP with the American Legion.

WW2-Reflections’ first tour film for its parent company, Labyrinth Media & Publishing Ltd. of Dublin, Ireland, specializes in WW II battlefield tour DVDS for the U.S. Market. The film goes on sale later this month at the official website:

www.TheAmericansOnDDay.com
.

"We are thrilled to have the chance to recognize American Heroes of D-Day this year, on the 65th Anniversary of Normandy, and what better place to do it than at the historical American Legion Post 43 building," said Lanni, WW2-Reflections.

The Americans on D-Day

makes extensive use of smart graphics and veterans' recollections, as well as invaluable assistance from Dale Dye, a retired U.S. Marine captain who founded Warriors Inc., Los Angeles, which specializes in training actors for war-themed film and television productions. "'The Americans on D-Day" provides an exciting insight into one of the most pivotal events of the 20th century," Dye said. "I'm really proud to have a hand in this effort to provide a foxhole-level view of what happened in Normandy on June 6, 1944.

"I've seen a lot of tour videos that purport to give viewers an insight into what gallant Americans endured and accomplished on D-Day, but this one really hits the mark," Dye said.

"When we flew over the English Channel, there were a million ships in the water, and I have yet to meet any of those guys who were on those ships," said 85-year old retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Morton (Mort) Schecter, Northridge, CA, who flew as a United States Army Air Corps tail gunner in a B-24 Liberator warplane, the most produced U.S. military aircraft during World War II. He was assigned to the 467th Bomb Crew and 791st Bomb Squadron in England. "I’m lucky to still be here," he said.

Schecter, who flew 35 missions out of England, is amongst the American Veteran heroes, who flew on D-Day June 6, 1941. Schecter and his son also plan to attend the premiere showing of The Americans on D-Day.

"We were never shot down, but we did crash-land with six 1,000 pound bombs on board. We flew the first mission on D-Day and bombed at 3:30 in the morning, and it was the easiest mission, because we never saw any fighters or opposition. Then on June 8th, two days later, we went to Germany, we couldn’t drop our bombs due to a malfunction. When we aborted the mission, we returned, but the plane landed on its belly in the field after the landing gear struts broke. We landed with the bombs onboard, which did not go off. So I’m still here, he said."

Schecter said he had an angel on his shoulder that day, and still has his list of the missions he flew. "Actor Jimmy Stewart was in our division, and he flew 28 missions. He entered the service as a buck private and when he died he was a General," he said.

Veterans who would like to RSVP to the event on April 27, 2009 need to call 323-851-3030 and leave your name, your city and phone number. Media must RSVP with MAYO 818-340-5300.

[Editor's note: EPK DVD with extras like uniforms and weapons used are available upon request. To obtain a preview copy contact Aida Mayo or George Mc Quade, call 818-340-5300, or email:

How to Use a Telescope - Reflector Telescopes an Introduction

Telescopes are of two main types – reflectors and refractors. The fundamental difference between both types is the kind of glasses used for light collection. Refractors use lenses while reflectors use mirrors. Going back to school physics, it is obvious that light from distant bodies, like celestial objects, comes at us as a parallel beam. Due to this parallel nature of the light rays, reflector telescopes use parabolic mirrors.

Such a parabolic mirror focuses each ray of light it receives from the original parallel beam at one single point. Because of this nature of the mirror, a reflector type telescope is far more advantageous in comparison to a refractor. A singularly important point to be noted is that reflectors do not suffer from chromatic aberrations which are a common problem for refractors. This is because, unlike refraction which alters the way in which different wavelengths are refracted, mirrors do not affect the wavelengths at all.

A second advantage is that they are relatively less expensive for the same quality of magnification. Furthermore, since light is reflected, only the reflecting surface needs a perfect finish. In the case of refractors, light has to pass form one side of the lens to the other, as a result of which both refracting surfaces need to be perfectly polished.

Astronomers generally prefer reflecting telescopes; however, even these have some disadvantages. The most glaring of these is the difficulty faced in correct alignment of the mirrors. Reflectors are equipped with an open tube, thus the inner optical elements require regular maintenance and cleaning. Without this care, images produced by the telescope end up blurred and indistinct. There are also instances of requiring secondary mirrors to correctly focus light at particular spots. These secondary mirrors can also adversely affect the image quality.

The major disadvantage faced with both refractors and reflectors is that the final image is an inverted image. An easy solution for this fault is the placement of a relay or prism in the passage of light, so that an already inverted image reaches the eyepiece, which again inverts it to produce an erect image. This is because the relay or the prism as the case may be, acts as a light ray inverter resulting in a final upright image.

The above paragraphs mention the use of secondary mirrors in reflectors to change the spot of light focus. These secondary mirrors are smaller than the primary mirror. According to historical accounts, Sir Isaac Newton used a mirror that was flat and inclined at 45 degrees as a secondary mirror. The purpose of this mirror was to shift the reflected light to an eyepiece at the side of the upper portion of the tube. This arrangement is now known as the Newtonian design and still finds takers.

There is another special design used in reflector type telescopes known as the Cassegrain design. This gives the light from the subject a specific path to reflect it better on the primary mirror. With this design it is possible to position the eyepiece at one’s own convenience. Even modern telescopes like the great Hubble Space Telescope make use of this design, and for the advantages discussed above, astronomers lean towards the reflector, and not the refractor.

Can the hubble space telescope show everyone on Earth the US Flag on the moon?

People and conspiracy theorists believe the moon walk was a hoax made by the governement. But can our faithful Hubble telescope prove once and for all the evidence that we left behind on that incredible time in history? Our American Flag.

Geoff G is correct. In optics, there is a limit to how much detail a telescope can make out, and that limit depends on the DIAMETER of the telescope, not on its magnification power. This is called the "Dawes limit," and it has to do with the wave nature of light. If you do the calculation (found on many websites), you find that in order for a telescope to see something as small as a Lunar Module at a distance of 240,000 miles, the telescope would have to be about 300 feet in diameter. (The Hubble's diameter is only about 7.5 feet.) So, because of the way light and optics work, there is no possible way a (small) telescope near the earth could ever image the Lunar Modules.

On the other hand, if you move the telescope very close to the moon, it's a whole different story. Just within the past few days, a satellite orbiting the moon has taken photos of the Apollo landing sites and the Lunar Modules there. Space Shuttle Nasa

Space Shuttle Nasa

A Brief History of Space Shuttle Innovation

As all now, 2009 is the year of astronomy. 40 years ago, Apollo 11 was sent to do that amazing Lunar expedition, and Neil Armstrong managed to set foot on moon land – however, how did it all start? Where did the space shuttle project begin? Up until about a century ago, reaching the farther regions of space was considered a daydream. Thanks to the space shuttle, it has now become possible to send out both human beings and costly equipment to outer space to conduct research, which can prove to be extremely useful. Truth be told, nowadays things are very different – we are thinking of ways to build landing spaces on the Moon and Mars, we have shuttles orbiting both stellar objects and more innovations are currently in development. Historian Chris Freville has written about this subject in one of his numerous works, and within this article, we shall dwell a bit more on the topic.

The technology for the space shuttle began being developed in the 1930s, when Eugene Sanger proposed a vehicle, which was to be a recyclable rocket plane capable of ferrying people to and from. Chris Freville notes that the first space shuttle that could perform the feat of carrying people to the outer space and again bring them back, was "Columbia". This vehicle used solid fuel rockets for the first time ever. Another space shuttle, again NASA's brainchild, was the "Challenger", which boasts of nine successful missions. The journey of innovation has not been easy, though, as the fatal explosion of the Challenger on January 28, 1986, goes to show.

The design of the space shuttle is an engineering marvel. The stack of the shuttle has a vertical launch, much like the traditional rocket launch. The shuttle lift off is powered by its two solid rocket boosters (SRBs) and three main engines (SSMEs). The engines are fueled by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. There is a two-stage ascent involved. In the first stage, the boosters are fully exhausted. The main engines though continue to burn for both the first and the second stages. After two minutes after the shuttle has left the earth, it has reached a sufficient height where it can release the now empty SRBs, and which have now become dead weight.

Chris Freville also explains how the SRB release path is calculated to drop in the ocean, from where they are recovered to be reused again. Lighter in weight now, the shuttle continues its ascent, fueled by the three SSMEs. Upon reaching the desired position and orbit, the SSMEs are shut down. The external engine is now jettisoned as it becomes useless. The device falls to burn up in the atmosphere. The shuttle relies on its orbital maneuvering system (OMS) to adjust or circularize the achieved orbit.

Though a lot of risk is involved in operating the space shuttle, and indeed, lives have been lost in the process, like any human endeavor, efforts of making outer space transportation more convenient and comfortable continue. Other planets have begun to be investigated, and the hope is that one day these efforts will bear rich fruit.

How would a space shuttle disaster affect NASA's current space program?

What if one of the last remaining space shuttle missions is to explode during liftoff.

How would that affect the 'remaining' space shuttle missions to the International Space Station' and how will this affect NASA's new constellation program and going back to the moon? Will it delay all the planned missions?

Yes, a disaster will delay every planned NASA mission. The whole fleet was grounded for years after the Challenger disaster. And it didn't fare a lot better after the Columbia tragedy, either.

The Christian Retreat Center - Find More Life By Stepping Out Of Life

Many men, women, and youth are finding Christian retreat centers as the most enjoyable and enriching places to spend time getting away from it all.  Ironically, many say they needed to step out of life to actually find more life!

Life has a way of draining all of us.  We come home tired but we usually don’t mean we are physically tired.  What so many mean when they say “I’m tired” is that they feel drained, life feels kind of purposeless and all the frenzied activities of life have lost their meaning.  They are with people, communicating with people, and around people, but they aren’t really connecting with people in ways that matter.  Emails, texting, polite small talk and just trying to get things done don’t bring the relational richness all of us need.

But, pulling out of our regular busyness and spending a long weekend or even a week at a Christian retreat center, helps us unwind, re-focus our lives, and draw near to others in ways life usually doesn’t allow.  A Christian retreat center creates the time and space we need to find purpose again, strengthen the friendships we treasure and maybe even build new friendships with people that share some of our beliefs, values and dreams for life.

And Christian retreat centers can be really fun, and even adventurous, too.  Long hikes in the woods, mountain biking, canoeing, rock climbing, and other physical sports are offered by many Christian retreat centers.  Activities are age-appropriate, and the planned activities for youth, and even adults, are supervised by trained staff, so everyone has a good time.

Men’s groups, women’s groups and many youth groups plan annual events at Christian retreat centers, so find one that fits your needs, is close to home or in an area you would love to visit, and spend a few days finding more life by stepping out of life.

The Kennedy Space Center: A Must-See Destination For Orlando Visitors

There is a lot on offer in Orlando and it is not possible to see everything in one vacation, however, there is one attraction that should not be missed when you are in this region, and that is the Kennedy Space Center.

While the inventors of the Orlando theme parks used their imagination to conjure up all the special effects and thrill rides, the fascination of the Kennedy Space Center comes from the real achievements of the space program and the possibility that it offers for the future.

The Center has built a huge visitor complex that combines exhibitions with space simulation rides. The newest attraction is the Shuttle Launch Experience, a six-story structure architecturally consistent with Space Shuttle facilities at Kennedy Space Center. As crew members ascend along the gantry, veteran shuttle astronauts share testimonials, setting the stage for the experience to come. Entering the heart of Space Shuttle operations for the pre-launch briefing, crew members are guided by veteran Space Shuttle Commander Charlie Bolden as he takes them step-by-step through the shuttle launch sequence. This is s simulation that gives you a feel of the real experience.

If you want to see the actual rockets and space vehicles then you should visit the Rocket Garden. Here visitors can view the Redstone, Atlas and Titan rockets that first put NASA astronauts in space. You can look inside the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules get an idea of the cramped quarters America's astronaut pioneers endured.

But why be content with just viewing the rockets, when you can also meet an astronaut? Fewer than 500 men and women - of the Earth's six billion people - have ever flown in space, however every day at the Kennedy Space Center, guests get the rare opportunity to meet a real-life member of NASA's Astronaut Corps.
Speaking of Astronauts, while you are at the Center you can also visit the Astronaut Memorial and the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. The Astronaut Memorial honors the 24 U.S. astronauts who gave their lives for space exploration and the Hall of Fame combines exhibits with interactive rides that give you a true taste of space. The G-Force Trainer lets you feel the pressure of four times the force of gravity and you can also experience what it's like to walk on the moon or ride a rover across the rocky Martian terrain. You can even try your hand at guiding the Space Shuttle to a smooth landing.

Do you like sci-films? Then visit the IMAX® theaters at the Center. The dream of spaceflight comes alive with a wall of sound, five-story screen and realistic 3D special effects. Dramatic footage shot by NASA astronauts during actual missions will make you feel like you're floating right alongside them.

If you arrive on the right day, you don't have to watch a film, you can view the real thing! You can watch the launch of a Shuttle, satellite launch or even a deep space probe from up close. The website of the space center has a schedule of upcoming launches.

If you have got any kids who are fascinated by space, then the Kennedy Space Center is the place to visit, and if you yourself are thrilled by humankind's march into space then plan to spend one day here.

Atlantis Mission Crew

Atlantis Mission Crew

History of space shuttle program was designed to carry space apparatus

History of space shuttle program was designed to carry space apparatus and up to seven crew members and passengers to the outer space. The initial objective was to make space shuttle a manned, multipurpose orbital launch space plane. This plan of a shuttle started in 1930’s when an American Eugen Sanger revealed the plan of making a rocket plane capable of carrying a crew on board. In the 1950’s United States started planning for such space transportation. Several suck proposals were converted into designs and tested.

But things were not easy. Christina Freville from NASA stated that what they were looking for is a reliable and less expensive rocket which was reusable. Christina Freville told that the idea was to make a reusable shuttle which could be launched like a space rocket but it must have features to land as a normal airplane. This idea was very appealing to the scientist at NASA but was also required a technical breakthrough.

NASA jumped onto the ideas and began planning the designs and exploring advanced engineering studies. It was back in 1972 when NASA was sure of building a space shuttle or a space transport system popularly known as STS. In the very beginning the spacecrafts were designed to use ablative heat shields which were supposed to burn away when the space shuttle enters the atmosphere of the earth. But this does not make the spacecraft reusable. To make it a reusable space shuttle the designers came up with a different idea. That was the use of ceramic tiles to give it an insulating shield. These tiles have the property of absorbing the heat while re entering the earths orbit. This made the space shuttle reusable and also safe for the traveling astronauts.

Christina Freville was himself in the team of scientists who were constructing and testing the shuttle for years.  There were four space shuttles made under Christina Freville and entire NASA team, namely Columbia, Discovery, Atlantis and the Challenger. The first space shuttle to take a flight was Columbia in 1981, piloted by John Young and Robert Crippen.

There are some incidents when things did not go with the plan in the outer space. The space shuttle challenger in 1986 exploded and the entire crew on deck was killed. Also in 2003 when the space shuttle Columbia was entering the Earth’s atmosphere it suddenly broke away into pieces.

In the 26 years of the space shuttle program history the scientists have seen many highs and lows in the missions. On one hand they have seen many successful missions which have resulted in immeasurable scientific gains, whereas on the other hand failed space shuttle missions have brought in loss of lives and billions and billions of money. NASA’s current plans call for the space shuttle to be retired from service in 2010 after around 30 years of service. Atlantis will be the first of the three remaining operational space shuttles to be retired.

As the atlantis has landed safely on the earth ..?

My question is they wont be any space mission after the atlantis ... I didn't understand they have conducted the farewell party in ISS ... Seriously they wont any space missions (space shuttle with crew meme)

In the last 6 years after the Columbia disaster, the space shuttle's final task was complete assembly of the International Space Station. That is now done, which is why the shuttles are retired.
The shuttle could not serve as an emergency escape vehicle docked to the space station for 6 months. Only the Russian vehicle Soyuz can do that. But NASA has now brought in commercial U.S. companies to help with the job of not only resupplying the American segment of the station but also launching/landing astronauts.
By doing this, space travel will become more widely accessible than it would be if traveling to-and-from low earth orbit was always under government control. Don't you think so?

Endeavour Space Shuttle

Endeavour Space Shuttle

Impossible. That's what the 2009 Augustine committee reported about prospects for NASA's human exploration of space, at least for the next seven years. NASA's budget issues remain at the top of the list holding humans from space but the same future may not hold true for its robots.

Two recent robot adventurers, rovers Spirit and Opportunity, lend credence to the idea that NASA's future may rapidly become reliant on robots to carry out missions in space. The Mars exploring rovers cost the agency more than $400 million apiece but have returned nearly six years of insightful data and imagery from the red planet's surface.

Contrast this against the charge for merely launching human passengers into orbit via space shuttle, at roughly $450 million per launch, and the fiscal benefits become quickly apparent. Not to mention, space shuttles such as Endeavour cost the agency almost $1.7 billion to manufacture alone.

NASA's Space Faring Robots of the Past

The Mars rovers aren't the first robots to plumb the mysteries of space for NASA. In fact, robots have investigated and visited more locations in our solar system than any human--oftentimes to locales an astronaut couldn't survive.

In 1973 the robotic space probe Mariner 10 traveled to the inner system planets of Mercury and Venus while its younger sister, Mariner 9, made the trip to Mars more than thirty years before Spirit and Opportunity. Alongside, Pioneer Venus 2 ejected robotic probes which dared an actual foot landing on the surface of Venus, a vacation spot bragging temperatures well over 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

One of those probes managed to survive the risky descent and dutifully report back for 45 minutes inside roasting temperatures and atmospheric pressure that no sane human would tempt. Clearly robots can take an exploratory role that would be too costly and too dangerous for a person.

While we have managed to put footprints and flags on our nearby Moon, robots have traveled to virtually all of the planets and even some of their moons. Of course, robots have visited our rocky celestial partner as well, among them include various NASA Pioneer spacecraft and an array of Soviet Luna spacecraft. Most of these robotic Moon explorers have taken a role as simple orbiters but a few have impacted the surface to pick through rocks and wander the barren surface.

NASA Robots on Earth

Many ideas and projects for robots at NASA have inevitably filtered down to worthy applications on Earth. After all, it is sometimes expensive or dangerous for a human to travel and visit locations on our own space rock.

One example is the Altus II, a robotic airplane developed by NASA. Originally designed as a scientific aircraft, in 2001 NASA presented the craft as a tool for fighting fires.

Human pilots have often risked their lives piloting aircraft in an attempt to survey and monitor deadly, often vast, wildfires. Because the Altus II can fly for such long duration--at one time the craft held a 26-hour record for single-flight endurance--it can continually co-operate with both ground based firefighters and off-planet satellites to photograph and monitor fires below.

In the future, NASA is likely to entertain ideas for using this sort of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) in a role exploring and monitoring the surface of alien worlds, carrying out automated scientific experiments at high-altitude, and coordinating with other robots on the ground and in space alike.

A Future for NASA Robots

Sure to be the envy of every earth-bound grasshopper, the Jollbot is wiry, robotic contraption that may take a leap for NASA's future exploration of space.

Robots that physically walk on some sort of leg or roll around on a set of wheels can easily be thwarted by unpredictable terrain. The Jollbot takes a different tack by literally forming a ball to roll across obstacles. If things get too tough, or if there are simply better places to explore, the Jollbot can hop its way to a distant new location or hurdle over a small patch of difficult ground before continuing its mission.

Such a robot could provide a far cheaper and far more efficient answer than previous attempts made by NASA at exploring other planets and moons. It also means that NASA could send many more of these robotic explorers than usual opening up the possibility of mapping and traversing entire landscapes in short periods of time, both on our home planet and anywhere in space we can afford to send them.

A much more human like robot is also being developed by NASA and DARPA--the Robonaut. Featuring an upper torso, human styled hands and arms, and even a head straight out of your favorite science fiction movie, the Robonaut has been proposed as the ideal space janitor and maintenance man.

Capable of being mounted in ways we humans might find offensive, the Robonaut could find itself perched on the end of a long, robotic arm for spacewalks intended to repair and maintain equipment such as found on the International Space Station or orbiting satellites. Partnered with humans, a Robonaut could make these spacewalks safer and easier, if not less time-consuming and costly.

Yet, the Robonaut isn't by any means limited to jaunts in space. One lucky Robonaut has been mounted on a Segway HT, the hip, two-wheeled electric scooter that has periodically foiled human riders such as George Bush.

It is certainly possible that NASA could find even more inventive ways to mount a Robonaut, on Earth, in space, and into the distant future. Whatever the case, it is apparent that robots form an effective cast and crew for NASA's future exploration of our planet and our universe.

Intnl Space Station and Japan's $1B lavatory : was this really necessary ?

At huge cost, Space Shuttle Endeavour has carried a huge state-of-the-art Japanese lavatory and two Japanese astronauts up to the ISS.
Surely a cheaper kind of thunder-box would have done (why not a good old British Portapotty?), when half the world is starving.

You have it wrong. It is actually a Japanese laboratory not lavatory they sent up.
I can see your confusion as they also took up a replacement pump for the lavatory (which is Russian by the way, and certainly not worth $1B), but that has nothing to do with the laboratory or the Japanese astronauts.
