Small Business Marketing â?? 5 Business Lessons Learned in Cabo

The thing about Cabo, Mexico, is you’re surrounded by a lot of entrepreneurs. From the people peddling their wares on the sidewalk to the wait staff and crew members serving you (and working for tips), it’s a great place to study what to do if you want to put more money in your pocket.

The best case study took place on a snorkel cruise ship. We had already paid for the cruise, so they weren’t trying to sell us anything. Instead crew members were trying to up their tips. Here are 5 things they did and what you can do in your own marketing to increase your sales:

1. They gave great service. I must say in Cabo, I really didn’t have any bad service and this ship wasn’t the exception. Crew members offered you a drink as you got on board and they were always circulating the boat, collecting empty glasses and plates and asking if you wanted a refill.

I know, this one sounds like a no-brainer. So why is it that so many businesses DON’T do it? Take a hard look at the service you provide your customers and see if it really is as good as it could be.

2. They were entertaining. On the ride back after snorkeling, 3 of the crew members (the fourth was driving the boat) put on a show. They dressed up in costumes, provided upside down shot (you’re probably better off if you don’t know what these are) and danced for us.

People want to be entertained, especially in your marketing. The very worst thing you can be is boring. When you’re boring, people turn you off. Once that happens, you’re done. You can’t sell anyone anything if they’ve stopped paying attention to you. And the more entertaining you are, the more they’ll listen to you and the more they’ll buy from you.

3. They asked for the sale. In America, crew members probably would have put the tip jar on a table so you could drop something in on your way off the boat. Maybe they would have put a cute sign on it encouraging you to tip. Not here. First, crew members announced that if you had a good time, you should thank them by giving them a tip. Then they passed the jar around. Actually, they did more then pass the jar around, they walked around themselves and stood in front of you with it. Now THAT’S asking for the sale!

How many times do you put the tip jar on the table and hope for the best? For the greatest results, you have to make it clear what you want your prospects to do next.

4. They used social proof. While they stood there with the tip jar, they also had a running commentary about how much people were putting in (and they did it with a mike on so everyone on the ship could hear). So you would hear things like: “Come on, that’s the best you can do? What are you cheap?†You get the picture. Talk about shaming people to give you more money. (I know we probably put more in then we would have without those comments.)

Now, while I wouldn’t necessarily recommend shaming your prospects into giving you money, using social proof is always a good idea. How I would do it is by showing your prospects how many other people are doing business with you. If you have a lot of customers and you tell your prospects that, it adds to your credibility (People want to do business with successful, busy people. If you’re not busy, there’s always that niggling worry in the back of your prospects’ heads that perhaps you don’t know what you’re doing.)

5. They make it easy to tip. Dollars, pesos, whatever, they’ll take it. They make it easy to tip because they’ll accept what you have.

I’m always amazed at how difficult it is to do business with some people. They’ll only take checks or they’ll only take Paypal. When you limit the ways people can give you money, you WILL limit your sales. Make it easy for people to do business with you and you remove one more reason for them to say “no.â€

Can I enter the US on a B1 visa, when I get of a ship as a crew member with C1/d Visa?

I work on a cruise ship as a crew member, and hence I have a C1/D visa, but after my contract, when I get off in Ft. Lauderdale, I would like to go visit my sister in MN, will I be able to just sign off /enter on a B1/B2 visa, or do I 1st have to leave the country, and then reenter.

Or can I travel to MN for a week or so on my C1/d Visa?

In order to enter the U.S. as a B-1, you would have to be a passenger on the voyage to Fort Lauderdale. You could not contribute to the navigation of the vessel. If you did contribute, you could only apply for admission as a D, crew member.

The two elements which constitute an alien as a "crewman" are, serving on a vessel, and seeking admission because of his occupation in that role. If you work during the voyage to Fort Lauderdale, you would be working crew and seeking admission because of your occupation, and that makes you a D.

A crew-member who is signing off, is classifiable as a D-2. In the D-2 classification, the admission period almost never is 29 days, even though it could be. The normal admission period for D-2 non-immigrants is "as needed." If the shipping agent can get you on a flight later in the day, that's how long you'll get.

A B-1 visa is only for visitors for business. Examples of B-1 purposes are:

* Consult with business associates;
* Attend a scientific, educational, professional or business convention, or a conference on specific dates;
* Settle an estate;
* Negotiate a contract;
* Participate in short-term training.

If you sign off the vessel in a foreign port and arrive in the U.S. as a passenger, you could apply for admission as a visitor for pleasure if you have a B-2 visa. The C-1 classification would not be appropriate for pleasure trips.

If you have a B-2 visa, and you are admitted as a D-2, you would have to leave the U.S. as a D-2 and try to re-enter as a B-2.

Music Memorabilia- Beware of Fake Autographs

Thanks to modern times and the World Wide Web, shopping is really easy and hassle free. You no longer have to hunt for your favorite products or services wasting time and energy. With technology at your finger tips, you can shop to your heart's content through swanky cyber stores and web stores. Be it buying authentic autographed photos or signed CDs- its all there and happening at online web stores.

But, the big point is how to spot the original genuine autographs items from the fake ones? If you surf online, you come across lost of phony autographs and fraudulent websites selling them. For example, if a website is offering a Rolling Stone CD display with a signed unique CD and cover for $20; be cautious as the price is too good for an original.

An experienced collector of autographed memorabilia may come to know about the credibility of an item. But can first time customers notice the subtle difference? It is pathetic to buy a prized collectible and wonder about it authenticity. Many celebrities, in today's time do not sign their full name, preferring to sign their initials on the item.

Therefore, it is all the easier for cheaters to forge the signature. It is advisable to check the authenticity of the website before buying a signed item. There are many popular and reliable web stores that offer 100 percent authentic products and autographed items. You can browse through search engines and select the top rated web sites for shopping. It is always better to be safe than sorry after buying a fake autographed item.

If you happen to know good reliable companies or memorabilia stores, you can look forward to purchase genuine goods from them. An autographed memorabilia is a great investment and a wondrous wall decorative item.

So, why go for fake or unreliable web stores when you can buy genuine hand autographed memorabilia from reliable web stores like everythingcollectible.com

USC player was the only one to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated?

I have a little question, nothing major, his name is John Roche and he is in S.C. in the Columbia area to sign autographs this year and I am just curious as to how to pronounce his last name? Is it Roash? Roach?

Thanks

It's pronounced Roach.

Tap water is not just safe for our health these days. It contains many microorganisms, pathogens, chemicals and minerals that are harmful to our body. These things are not just harmful to our health but also make the water taste different.

Many experts discovered that many diseases are being acquired from tap water. That is why water filters came into existence. From the name itself, it filters water from impurities and cleans it to be potable.

Many companies of these water filters push through its use not just to gain profit but also to help contribute to lessen the use of plastic bottles used in purified and distilled waters that are harmful to our environment.

Although the companies that sell watered bottles use the finest filtration system not present in home filtration. These home filters also have their own technology in removing the odor and taste of the chlorine present in water. These are also good in removing mercury, lead, magnesium, and cadmium that is present in water and harmful to our health, which can also cause much water-borne diseases.

Another effective technology in water filtration is reverse osmosis. Although it has similarities with the way of normal filtration, water filtered in reverse osmosis tastes better than any other.

Choosing the right filters also assures you of clean results of water. The more steps a filter has, the cleaner the water you can consume. It is also better to choose trusted filter brands to ensure best water results. You can also read some of the water filter reviews in various Internet resources.

So, you can buy your own filters to ensure your health and your family. Just always remember to make a wise choice in buying the best water filters so that you will consume only the cleanest water.

John Glenn

John Glenn

The Space Race began on October 4, 1957 with the launch of Sputnik and ended on July 17, 1975 with the rendezvous of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft. Between those dates, humans walked, drove, and played golf on the moon. It is hard to believe that more than 30 years later, many kids are unaware of this amazing time. Here are five awarding films that can bring it alive for them.

Apollo 13 tells the story of Commander James A. Lovell, Command Module pilot John L. "Jack" Swigert, and Lunar Module pilot Fred W. Haise, who launched from earth on April 11, 1970 in the ill-fated Apollo 13. Two days after the launch, an explosion caused by an electrical fault in an oxygen tank crippled the Apollo spacecraft. Despite great hardship caused by severe constraints on power, the crew successfully returned to Earth. The mission was thus called a "Successful Failure." This wonderful award winning film certainly brings that moment to life.

The Right Stuff tells the story of NASA's Mercury Program, and the seven men chosen to lead the missions, Malcolm Scott Carpenter, "Gordo" Cooper, Jr., John Glenn, "Gus" Grissom, "Wally" Schirra, Alan Shepard, and "Deke" Slayton. Full of brilliant performances, this film will keep you riveted while it educates.

Wonderfully kid friendly, October Sky tells the story of Homer Hickam, son of a West Virginia coal miner who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry, eventually becoming a NASA engineer. While attending Big Creek High School in 1960, he led a group of boys who built rockets. They called themselves the Big Creek Missile Agency. They went on to win the National Science Fair and full college scholarships. Perhaps the best historical element of this film is its combination of Space Race dreams with West Virginia coal town reality. This film introduces kids to the concept of company towns in which everyone lived in company houses, sent their kids to the company school, and shopped in a company store. It also gently introduces them to the union movements of the fifties, along with the powerful draw space flight had on everyday Americans at the time.

From Earth to the Moon is a Golden Globe winning twelve episode miniseries that relates the entire space race, from the Mercury and Gemini projects to the legendary Apollo missions. It may not be star studded, but it tells the full story and entertains at the same time.

In the Shadow of the Moon is a wonderful award-winning documentary that brought together the surviving members of NASA's Apollo missions and allowed them to tell their story in their own words. Mixed with archival footage, we get to meet the men who lived the experience and actually walked on the moon.

All of these films are family friendly, and you can probably find copies of them at your local library. So why not plan a Historybusting evening with your kids? Give them a little education and fun at the same time. They will thank you later.

I want to go to john glenn high because i go to wayne memorial right now?

i have no friends there i am unhappy how do i get my principal to let me switch school??

ps i live in michigan

Its not up to your principal what you school you go to. Personally I would want to go to Wayne Memorial either, but I just don't like Wayne Westland schools. If Wayne has school of choice which I don't know because I now live in North Carolina, then you can go to John Glenn. Your parent would just have to drive you everyday. They would not have a bus that came by your house. I say talk to your parent about this. It is ultimately their decision whether they want to drive you or not. I would also say give it a few weeks. I didn't even think school started up there yet, so just wait. You never know you might really like it this year.

Why is Laganai Kent using my e-mail address! If you know her, tell her to stop!?

She has been signing up for my space, photo bucket, vitamin crap and a ton of other stuff, it's not cool...if you know her, please tell her to stop.

I talked to her and she said, "Nope."

Seriously, you're pretty well hosed. I hope that this was a throw-away account (i.e. a yahoo account you don't care about abandoning). You're probably going to have to set up a new one.

The Naval career of Raphael Semmes is one of the most amazing stories of the American Civil War history. Born on September 27, 1809 in Maryland, Raphael Semmes began his Naval career as a midshipman in 1806. In June 1861, he commanded the USS Sumter and thus began his career as one of the most successful raiders of commerce in Naval history, putting a 6 million dollar dent in Federal shipping.

In January 1862, Semmes sailed the USS Sumter to Gibraltar to for some much needed repairs but lost her to enemy warships. He was in command of the USS Sumter for only 6 months, but in that short time, he was responsible for the capture of 18 merchant ships. His tactic was to fly a neutral, or sometimes even Union flag upon approach, and then hastily run up the Confederate flag and capture a ship before they had time to react with any real force. While this tactic was against 'the rules of war', it kept casualties on both sides at a minimum. Raphael Semmes was fast becoming well known to both sides of the Civil War. He was branded a dreaded "pirate" to the Union, and a beloved "hero" to the Confederates; however, he was also known for his fair treatment and decency towards those he took prisoner. Semmes had a great regard for life and took every precaution to spare the lives of the merchant captain and crew. He never allowed mistreatment of the officers, crews or passengers of his captive vessels or their personal effects, and demanded his crew treat the captives with the utmost kindness and respect. He also treated his own crew as members of his own family, and mourned the loss of any of them.

After the loss of the USS Sumter, Semmes and his crew escaped to England where he was promoted to Captain. Captain Semmes acquired a commercial vessel in Madiera, an Island belonging to Portugal, and converted her to the famous warship, the USS Alabama. Semmes was in command of the USS Alabama for 2 years and in that time, he was responsible for the capture of 69 merchant ships and the destruction of one warship. He had, between the Sumter and the Alabama, more than 500 men under his command and had held at one time or another, a total of around 2,000 prisoners, but never lost a single one to disease.

One of the most valuable captures of Captain Semmes is that of the Vanderbilt Liner, the Ariel. Captain Semmes was lying in wait for an incoming ship, hoping to replenish his treasury with the gold that usually constituted part of the cargo of the ships coming to port. Disappointingly, an outbound ship, the Ariel, was the first to come in sight, and had her decks crowded with passengers. When the passengers saw they were to be captured by the hated "pirate", they started hiding their valuables and became agitated and fearful. Captain Semmes then sent a handsome young Lieutenant and a midshipman to charm the ladies and allay their fears. When the young Confederate officer and midshipman boarded the Ariel, they assured they were not there to make war on women and children, and that none of their personal belongings would be stolen. The two made such an impression on the women passengers, that they returned aboard the Alabama with their brass buttons and gold lace missing from their uniforms, having been appropriated by the women as keepsakes of their encounter with the dashing Southern Raider.

When the Alabama made port in France, she was blockaded by the USS Kearsarge. On June 19, 1864, the Alabama and the Kearsarge met in one of the most famous sea battles of the Civil War. Draping the Kearsarge with chains, Captain John Winslow turned the warship into an ironclad and therefore was able to withstand the bombardments from the Alabama. The USS Alabama took heavy damage and Captain Semmes ordered his crew to abandon ship. Many of the crew was rescued by the Deerhound, an English yacht. Captain Semmes, injured in battle, recovered in England. Raphael Semmes himself recounted: "My officers and crew formed a great military family, every face of which was familiar to me; and when I looked upon my gory deck, toward the close of the action, and saw so many manly forms stretched upon it, with the glazed eye of death, or agonizing with terrible wounds, I felt as a father feels who has lost his children--his children who had followed him to the uttermost ends of the earth, in sunshine and storm, and been always true to him."

In February 1865, Captain Semmes was promoted to Rear Admiral. In April of the same year he was made Brigadier General and in December became a prisoner of war. On the 15th of December he was arrested for treason. His captors tried in vain to find anyone who would speak against Raphael Semmes. They wrote letters requesting help from former merchant captains and crew of the ships he had captured, but could not find a single former prisoner who had experienced maltreatment from Raphael Semmes or his crew. Semmes was released April 7, 1866, for lack of evidence.

After his release, Raphael Semmes worked as a professor of philosophy and literature at what is now LSU, as a newspaper editor, and a judge. He moved to Mobile, Alabama and there lived out his life. Semmes died in 1877 and is buried in the Mobile Catholic Cemetery. A statue stands in his honor on government Street in downtown Mobile, Alabama, and in 1953, was inducted into the Alabama Hall of Fame.

The actions and conduct of Raphael Semmes stands as a model for all those who are unfortunate enough to find themselves engaged in combat.

Can crew members from others team and/or NASCAR tamper with the cars in the garage at night?

I was just wondering since there's so much talk that Jeff Burton's car may get sabatoged during the next 5 races to prevent him from winning the Sprint Cup title. And to HELP Jimmie Johnson win his 3rd in a row. I was just wondering if its possible that the cars could get tampered with late at night after the drivers and crew members have gone to bed.

Do you know if the garage area has sercurity?

NASCAR could but teams are not suppose to be in the garage without a NASCAR official assisting them I think. I know that's true for impound races.

"Contact" is a very exciting movie about the search and eventual discovery of extraterrestrial life. Jodie Foster plays Ellie Arroway, a young scientist obsessed with the search. She delivers a great performance, as does Matthew McConaughey as Palmer Joss, her religious boyfriend. I mainly like the film for the storyline, however, which is based on the fictional novel of the same title by Carl Sagan.

The movie concerns Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster), a young scientist interested in contacting extraterrestrial civilizations. Despite repeated efforts of the director to shut down the project and cancel her research, she eventually discovers an unmistakable signal from an intelligent source from the nearby Vega star system, consisting of the first several prime numbers. After investigating this signal further, others now working on the project discover a more complex message embedded in the first one, which turns out to be a video recording of Adolf Hitler's opening speech at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. At first the researchers are horrified, but Ellie realizes that this was probably the first televised message powerful enough to be picked up by an alien civilization. Upon further investigation, a third layer of the message is discovered, this one consisting of thousands of pages of at first undecipherable code. The billionaire industrialist S.R. Hadden (John Hurt) finally steps in and shows Ellie how to decipher the message, which turns out to be a blueprint of a machine, whose purpose is unknown.

Eventually the team learns part of the purpose of the machine, which includes a seat for a human passenger, presumably to take that person to Vega. This results in a huge international effort to build the machine, whose construction is begun at Cape Canaveral, Florida. A religious fanatic suicide bomber ends up sabotaging the project by destroying the machine. Fortunately, another identical machine is secretly being built in Japan, and Ellie is invited to take the journey.

Once completed, Ellie boards the machine, which begins operating. It takes her through a series of wormholes in which she witnesses some fantastic events. Finally she is taken to what looks like a familiar beach, where she is visited by an alien who looks like her father when she was a child. The alien explains to Ellie some of the details of his civilization as well as the wormhole transit system which brought her there.

Shortly thereafter, she is returned home. Unfortunately, she arrives at nearly the exact moment that she left and the crew outside think the machine malfunctioned. To add insult to injury, an 18-hour recording of the trip she'd taken went blank. Thus, the consensus is that the project was a hoax provided by Hadden, who now resides on the Mir space station. However, once the presidential advisors realize that there was 18 hours of static recorded in what should have been a fraction of a second, they decide to continue her SETI research, though she cannot offer any proof of her discovery.

How come the USA military is weak?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Rescue crews pulled bodies from the rubble of bombed buildings Friday after a barrage of coordinated attacks across eastern Baghdad neighborhoods killed at least 64 people and wounded more than 280 within half an hour, police said. The USA Marines stood by and watched.

The latest spasm of violence on Thursday evening — which included explosives planted in apartments, car bombs and several rocket and mortar attacks on mainly Shiite neighborhoods — came even as Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Iraqi forces should have control over most of the country by year's end. Of course we said that about Vietnam too.

The death toll from the Baghdad bombings increased to 64 people as more bodies were recovered, police Capt. Mohammed Abdul-Ghani said Friday the USA appears to be very weak and the Marines make a lot of promises but never deliver.

Welcome Back Eurodite. Your question is asked from a position of fact rather than opinion. Let me instead ask you to phrase your question such as: Do you think the US Military is weak, and why? rather than stating it as it is true.

Let me assure you, as an Officer on a MiTT here in Taji, Iraq (10 minutes NW of Baghdad) that we are not "weak," by any definition of the word.

Would you rather this was a bloodbath against the Iraqi people? Because we are more than capable of killing every person in this god-forsaken country (sometimes I ask myself if that isn't the proper way to proceed), but we exercise something called "restraint" which proves that we are even stronger than most people would care to admit.

This enemy is vile, corrupt and self serving. Don't point your anger at the US Army nor the Marines, direct it towards Washington and the "Civilian" authorities who have us spill blood on their behalf. If you don't like the policy - vote the guy out of office. I don't enjoy it here, but the American people put Bush in office, so we are here fighting to do their bidding, right or wrong, it is irrelevant.

But weak sir, we are not.

Sappi Project #5 bet you cant solve it?

There is fork in a river, on the left side of the fork is a methane power plant and in the middle and a little lower is a metal plating plant, they are upstream of a river and there is a flood zone where the fork turns unto 1 larger stream, the trees in the flood zone are affected by some pollutant that seems to be killing trees in this zone from the roots up, some of the branches where without leaves and do not consider organic (carbon-containing) contaminants or Hg (mercury).

God bless you.
