Star Trek is one of the longest running science fiction entertainment franchises in history. Gene Roddenberry created the original Star Trek television series for American audiences. The original show was on air for three seasons, starting in 1966. It was about the interplanetary adventures of the Starship Enterprise, headed by Captain James Kirk (portrayed by Hollywood icon William Shatner) and the Federation crew. Six movies and an animated TV series continued the original series’ storyline.
There were four other television shows produced, centering on different sets of characters. Star Trek: The Next Generation occurred several decades after the original series, with Jean-Luc Picard, the Starship Enterprise’s current captain played by the venerable Patrick Stewart. The stories of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine happened within the same time frame, and were led by commanding officers Kathryn Janeway (played by Kate Mulgrew) and Benjamin Sisko (portrayed by Avery Brooks). Four subsequent feature films were made about the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation. A revival of the original Enterprise characters was seen in a 2009 movie.
The Star Trek franchise also comprised hundreds of books, several computer games, various merchandise lines, and a Las Vegas attraction centered on the mythos.
