Kumeyaay Winter Solstice Double Sunrise 12/24/2011 wide field
Saturday, 24 December 2011, 6:53 am - 6:54 am PST Double sunrise from Kumeyaay Winter Solstice archaeoastronomy observatory site on Cowles Mountain, San Diego, California. The large boulders that create the doubling effect are approximately 17 miles to the southeast. In contrast to my telephoto-enbabled video made yesterday (500 mm), today's sunrise was recorded with a shorter focal length lens (95 mm) to more closely represent the experience of naked eye observation from the site. The 2011 Winter Solstice occurred at 0530 UTC Thursday, 12/22/2011 (9:30 PM on Wednesday, 12/21/2011 in San Diego). This morning's sunrise at 6:53 AM PST was 57 hours 23 minutes after true solstice. Once again chilly Santa Ana winds and clear skies resulted in near freezing overnight temperatures. Conditions at the site this morning were brisk and windy but featured excellent visibility in all directions. Using a shorter focal length lens also helped reduce the effects of wind-induced camera jitter and air turbulence. I have now made this trek an annual tradition since the early 90s. I use records of prior year observations to help determine the best places to stand for seeing a symmetric double sunrise as a function of days and hours before or after true solstice, Today I adjusted my position 15 meters south of the solstice viewing turnaround point, an increase of 10 meters from yesterday's viewing position. Notice how far to the right of the boulder piles the sun appears to move as it rises <b>...</b> |

Kumeyaay Winter Solstice Double Sunrise 12/23/2011
Friday, 23 December 2011, 6:53 am PST Double sunrise from Kumeyaay Winter Solstice archaeoastronomy observatory site on Cowles Mountain, San Diego, California. The 2011 Winter Solstice occurred at 0530 UTC Thursday, 12/22/2011 (9:30 PM on Wednesday, 12/21/2011 in San Diego). This morning's sunrise at 6:52 AM PST was 33 hours 20 minutes after true solstice. In contrast to yesterday's viewing when the air was calm and the sky very hazy, especially to the southeast, this morning's conditions were cold, clear, and windy as result of Santa Ana winds that arose last night. In fact there was a wind warning advisory from the National Weather Service. In addition to noise and camera wobble from the gusty wind, there was considerable air turbulence, causing the skyline features to jiggle much more than during typical viewing. The large boulders are approximately 17 miles distant. I have now made this trek an annual tradition since the early 90s. I use records of prior year observations to help determine the best places to stand for seeing a symmetric double sunrise as a function of days and hours before or after true solstice, Today I only needed to adjust my position 5 meters south of the solstice viewing turnaround point. Notice how far to the right of the boulder piles the sun appears to move as it rises. That angle contributes to the challenge of identifying a good position for the symmetric view and most attractive doubling. This recording was made with a Nikon D7000 DSLR and <b>...</b> |

The 2012 Astrotheology Calendar
stellarhousepublishing.com "The 2012 Astrotheology Calendar serves as a basic introduction into the world of archaeoastronomy, solar mythology and astrotheology. As has been the case with our past Astrotheology Calendars, in addition to showing lunar phases and astrological signs, this year's calendar highlights the solstices, equinoxes and fire festivals with a different color for each of the eight relevant days. Also as in the past, in our quest to inspire an interest in astrotheology, mythology and archaeoastronomy, we have provided fascinating information about the astronomical alignments and astrotheological meanings of various archaeological sites and ancient artifacts from around the world." "This calendar is actually a book with 34 pages of text consisting of 12 full-page images, the actual calendar and text explaining what we have put together here." The 2012 Astrotheology Calendar at Amazon: www.amazon.com The 2011 Astrotheology Calendar stellarhousepublishing.com The 2010 Astrotheology Calendar stellarhousepublishing.com PS Special thanks to our dear friend Allan Jones who created most all of the videos for Acharya S/Stellar House Publishing. He was in the editing process when he passed away. This is his last video. He was an outstanding person and a great friend. He will be sorely missed. |

In addition to showing lunar phases and astrological signs, this calendar highlights the solstices, equinoxes and fire festivals with a different color for each of the eight relevant days. In our quest to inspire an interest in astrotheology, mythology and archaeoastronomy, we have also provided fascinating information about the astronomical alignments and astrotheological meanings of various archaeological sites and ancient artifacts from around the world. As examples of this ancient knowledge, this calendar reveals interesting information about the site of Machu Picchu in Peru, as well as Newgrange Tomb/Temple in Ireland, the Konark Sun Temple in India, the Standing Stones of Callanish, France, the Caracol Observatory at Chichen Itza, Yucatan, and the Temple at Karnak, Egypt. Also discussed are artifacts like the Nebra Disk, the Trundholm Sun Chariot, and the Beit Alpha Synagogue Zodiac." 2011 Astrotheology Calendar stellarhousepublishing.com 2010 Astrotheology Calendar www.stellarhousepublishing.com |

Archaeoastronomy: Monument Proposal
Briefly, a proposed astronomical observation site. This animation was created in Google Sketchup 8, for Professor Bryan Penprase's Archaeoastronomy course at Pomona College (ASTRO 006 PO). A brief demonstration of the motion of the sun's shadow, throughout the course of a day. While the model was positioned at latitude of 34° for the city of Claremont, CA, and the date set for the winter solstice, we cannot attest to the accuracy of the cast shadow rendered in Google Sketchup. |

Archaeoastronomy (Part 3/7)
by Reza Assasi in CafeLitt (in persian) cafelitt.ca Archaeoastronomy is the study of how ancient people have understood and used the phenomena in the sky. Archaeoastronomy is not the history of astronomy; In fact it focuses on the cultural and antropoligical aspect of skywaching in the past. This academic field brings together several disciplines such as archaeology, anthropology, astronomy, statistics and probability, mythology, and history. This session is a general introduction to Archaeoastronomy along with discussing about a few examples of the recent work done by scholars in Iran and the World. |
