The name alone conjures up beautiful images ... the Bay Of Rainbows ("Sinus Iridum" in Latin) exceeds your wildest fantasies! Ask any skywatcher and they'll tell you that Rainbows is a true marvel, just northwest of Mare Imbrium (Sea Of Rains) and surrounded by the stunning Jura Mountains, with dramatic Crater Bianchini and the landing site of Luna 17 just a short excursion away! Wildly popular as a romantic and unique gift idea for any occasion — including Valentines Day, Sweetest Day, birthday, anniversary or Christmas — give the gift of rainbows!
Although the northwestern portion of Mare Imbrium dominates this region (it covers most of the lower-right half of the image), it is the distinctive semi-circle known as Sinus Iridium (the so-called "Bay Of Rainbows," right of center) that captures the eye. Rimmed by the Montes Jura chain and keeping company with craters Mairan, Sharp, Bianchini and Maupertuis, Iridium is one of the Moon's signature formations. To the north is sweeping Mare Frigoris, with Sinus Roris to the west and Oceanus Procellarum to the southwest.
